Carved masks
Special exhibition at the Swiss Woodcarving Museum in Brienz
Masks are among the earliest relics of cultural history – masks that soothe the spirits of ancestors, dismiss winter, stave off the plague, heal lunacy, ban harmful powers, or conjure rain and fertility. They make visible the invisible, the beneficial, or the terrible, to honour it, or on the other hand, to prevent it and drive it out.
